Soaring Legal Costs for the City

It's time to have top notch in-house legal counsel at the City of Greensboro. We lived through the nightmarish mire while Linda Miles and her associates ran the city legal department. Since she left things have not gotten better. For the past three years the city has spent for outside legal services: 2006, $1,324,593; 2007, $1,175,019; and the first half of 2008, $824,139.

With a proposed city budget that reaches for new highs in expenditure, a competent in-house attorney will create at least one plug in the leaking dam.

Mr. Knight, No attorney worth his salt would work for Mitch Johnson. Now perhaps with the change and putting the Legal Department directly under the Council and then paying a really, really good salary someone will take the position.

I do agree with you that the city needs its own top notch attorney however. I can not see where those hired from outside, altho I hear they are from top notch firms. have done anything but file billable hours. I know the few times these attorneys hired b y the city have attended City Council meetings I was not impressed with them or their advice. And advising the Council that they have no defensible case against the 60 suing rogue cops is patent nonsense. Neither the FBI nor the SBI found evidence of discrimination. I would think that almost as highly defensible evidence as one could get. But this would mean having to admit Mitch Johnson has been lying and to say that these attorneys know they would lose all these easy and lucrative billable hours. BB
